Bump caps are not a substitute for a safety helmet
This is the single most important thing to get right when specifying head impact protection: a bump cap, tested to EN 812, is designed to protect against minor bumps and grazes from static or low-energy hazards — think low doorways, pipework, or shelving in a warehouse — not against falling objects or the kind of impact energy a construction or industrial safety helmet (EN 397 or EN 12492) is engineered to absorb. Specifying a bump cap where a full safety helmet is genuinely required is a safety gap, not a cost saving.
Where bump caps are the right choice
Bump caps are appropriate wherever the actual hazard is repeated minor head contact with fixed, static objects rather than falling or flying objects — common examples include warehouse and logistics environments with low racking or pipework, vehicle maintenance work in confined spaces under a vehicle, and kitchen or food-processing environments with low fixed equipment. Many are designed to be lighter and more comfortable for extended wear than a full safety helmet, which matters where the actual risk profile doesn't justify the heavier protection.
What else varies across bump cap and impact-protector ranges
Beyond the core impact-protection shell, ranges typically vary in ventilation, whether they integrate with other PPE (ear defenders, visors, headlamps), washability for food or cleanroom environments, and available colours for site visual-management schemes. Confirm the specific hazard the cap needs to address against EN 812's scope before selecting bump-cap-grade protection over a full safety helmet.
