Start with the ecosystem, not the screen
An HMI (human-machine interface) panel is rarely a standalone purchase — it's programmed, networked and tag-mapped to a specific PLC or controller, and that relationship is usually brand- and often series-specific. A Siemens SIMATIC panel, a Schneider Electric Harmony panel and an Omron NA-series panel are configured through entirely different software ecosystems. For a replacement, matching manufacturer series (or at minimum, brand) is what keeps the job a straightforward swap rather than a re-engineering project; for a new installation, the choice usually follows whatever PLC platform the rest of the system already uses.
Display size and resolution
Size against two things: how much information needs to be visible at once, and how far the operator stands from the screen. A simple status or alarm indicator can run comfortably on a small display in the 3–7in range. A panel managing multiple process screens, trend graphs and recipe selection generally needs 10in or larger, with resolution to match — a small, low-resolution screen crowded with dense process data becomes illegible fast.
Interface and IP rating
Confirm the HMI's available ports — Ethernet and serial are the most common in industrial installations — against what your PLC or controller actually offers before ordering; a mismatch here is a common and entirely avoidable cause of commissioning delay. Most indoor panel-mount HMIs ship unrated for ingress protection, which is fine behind a cabinet door; a panel mounted directly on a washdown, outdoor, or dusty machine face needs an explicitly IP-rated unit instead.
