Why the accessory range matters as much as the tray itself
A cable tray run is rarely a straight, unsupported length — real installations need supports at regular intervals, direction changes, covers where protection or aesthetics require it, and secure earth bonding across every joint. The accessory range around a given tray system exists to solve exactly these practical problems, and — as with most containment systems — accessories are generally sized and profiled to match a specific tray width and manufacturer range rather than being universal.
The core accessory categories
Supports and brackets (wall-mount, ceiling-drop, trapeze-style) carry the tray's weight at intervals set by the tray's load rating and the cable fill it carries — under-supporting a heavily loaded run risks sag and long-term deformation. Bends, tees and reducers handle direction changes and width transitions without forcing cables into tight, damaging bend radii. Covers protect cables from mechanical damage, UV exposure, or dust ingress where required by the installation environment. Bonding and earthing straps or clips maintain electrical continuity across every joint in the tray, which many electrical codes require explicitly for metallic containment systems used as part of the earthing arrangement.
Fill ratio and future capacity
Beyond the physical accessories, most cable tray specifications reference a maximum fill ratio — the proportion of the tray's cross-section that can be filled with cables, typically well under 100% — both for heat dissipation and to leave room for future additions. Specifying a tray width with genuine spare capacity, not just enough for the initial cable count, is standard practice precisely because retrofitting a wider tray later is far more disruptive than installing adequate capacity up front.
